11 Ways Suicide Squad Needs To Set Up Future DC Movies
5. For God’s Sake Don’t Jump The Shark
One of the biggest problems with Batman v Superman was the decision to go too big too early, and effectively jump the shark by having Lex Luthor give birth to Doomsday. The villain should have been set up in a similar way to Thanos in the MCU - as a serious threat with world-ending capabilities, not as a third act tack-on for dramatic effect.
Suicide Squad needs to be careful not to escalate in such an unsatisfying way, pulling out narrative twists for the sake of it, because a sequel needs somewhere to go.
The Hints
It doesn't look great, frankly. Even the less spoilerish of reviews have criticised the villain who isn't Enchantress, and the parallel with a Ghostbusters-sized big bad at the climax should be enough to send chills.
But at least they haven't done it with a recognisable villain and painted themselves into a corner. After all, they could have made Joker a venom-infused cartoonish Hulk, like they did in the Arkham Asylum game. That kind of thing - like Doomsday - is remarkably hard to overcome next time out.
