It might not be a popular opinion, but neither The Lost World nor Jurassic Park III are bad films. They're both entertaining in their own right and there are a lot of very good ideas in there (to go with some deeply regrettable ones, admittedly). Unfortunately, they both slightly misjudged what was successful about the original, and the second sequel was poorly received enough to kill the franchise.

When Jurassic World was planned, however, the film-makers knew exactly the right approach to capturing a massive audience: unabashed nostalgia for the first film. And part of that nostalgia went publicly ragging on the sequels, as it was announced that they would no longer be considered canon.

That meant the action hero Ian Malcolm was out, there would be no mention of raptor voice simulators and nothing else substantial (though there was a spinosaurus skeleton included as a small nod).
