Darth Vader's billing as the strongest Force user of all time - or the most sensitive (the semantics don't really change anything) - is had to accept on reflection.

The Truth

If he was so powerful, why couldn't he detect the fact that his children were alive? Why could he read Luke's Force sensitivity but not pick up on Leia's presence too?

This is far from the only issue with Vader's relationship with his children - like not knowing Padme was having twins, as if ultrasound technology somehow doesn't exist. The fact that he wasn't able to sense the presence of his children within Padme is further indication that the Force couldn't have been THAT strong in him.
