Matthew McConaughey's resurgence has been well documented, and it has come to full bloom this year with a Golden Globe win and a definite Oscar nomination on the way for his work in Dallas Buyer's Club. Sadly, his work in that film has kept one of his earlier performances this year a well-kept secret from the general public. In the fantastic Mud, McConaughey plays a character who feels like something out of a classic American novel. Mysterious and enigmatic, but oozing McConaughey's signature charm, his Mud would be an Academy Award nominated turn almost any other year. Dallas Buyer's Club's later release, and more politically-minded subject matter however, has eliminated any chance for a win in Supporting Actor for McConaughey. Still, it feels like a few years from now, Mud will be the movie people most associate with McConaughey's resurgence, even more so than Dallas Buyer's Club and his cameo in The Wolf Of Wall Street. Let's just hope he doesn't go back to making sterile rom-coms...
