12 Most Desperate Oscar Grab Movies Of 2015

By Jack Pooley /

4. By The Sea

Why It's Desperate: After her widely-hyped Oscar-grab movie Unbroken ended up with just three crafts nominations last year, Angelina Jolie is back in the saddle again a year later for a contemplative romantic drama starring herself and husband Brad Pitt. Both have won Oscars before (albeit for producing in Pitt's case), while cinematography is handled by one-time nominee Christian Berger (The White Ribbon) and the score by one-time winner Gabriel Yared (The English Patient). Will It Succeed?: It's somewhat ironic that many have compared Jolie's film to Richard Linklater's Before trilogy, because those movies, though brilliant, typically only get major recognition for their screenplays, but Jolie's film isn't even likely that scoop that single nomination. Critics have largely dismissed By the Sea as a vapid vanity project, ensuring it won't get a single nod from the Academy. Still, the Golden Globes love Angie, so if they want her to turn up to their dinner and drinks reception, maybe they'll give her a sly nomination (remember, they did it with The Tourist).
