12 Most Emotionally Devastating Movie Moments Of 2017
2. Star Wars: The Last Jedi – Carrie Fisher’s Last Appearance
It might be over a year since Carrie Fisher left us mere mortals, but we still haven’t really come to terms with her death. When somebody is such an important part of a phenomenon such as Star Wars it’s hard to accept we won’t be seeing them anymore, which made her final outing as Princess Leia Organa an emotional rollercoaster.
While we at least have her swansong in The Last Jedi, it’s still sad that we won’t get to see her in Episode IX, which if the pattern established by The Force Awakens’ focus on Han Solo and The Last Jedi’s focus on Luke Skywalker would have been Leia’s movie.
As if that wasn’t a sad enough fact to face, writer-director Rian Johnson really tugged at the old heartstrings with a couple of tear-jerker moments that had us all reaching for the Kleenex like Leia’s brief reunion with her brother Luke and he tells her “No one’s ever really gone” – a reference to Han Solo’s death that takes on new meaning in light of Fisher’s passing.
Or the sweet dedication during the end credits that reads “In loving memory of our princess, Carrie Fisher”. Now if you’ll please excuse me, I think I’ve got something in my eye.
