12 Most Underrated Movies Of 2017
4. Lucky
Actor John Carroll Lynch’s directorial debut tells the tale
of Lucky – a remarkably healthy chain-smoking 90-year-old atheist played by the
late, great Harry Dean Stanton – and the spiritual journey he embarks on
through a series of insightful but everyday encounters with the quirky
inhabitants of his small desert town after a minor health blip causes him to
confront the inevitability of his own death.
That might not sound like the jolliest premise but what could’ve been a downright depressing movie is actually a charming, warmly funny mediation on aging and mortality thanks to Lynch’s thoughtful direction and brilliant performances from Stanton and his ensemble cast of co-stars including David Lynch and Ron Livingston.
Granted, Lucky probably isn’t the most marketable of movies so the fact it wasn’t a big hit at the box office is no great surprise but that Stanton’s befittingly beautiful swansong didn’t get some major love on the awards circuit is a travesty.
