12 Most Underrated Movies Of 2017
6. Brigsby Bear
Director Dave McCary’s first feature film was a hit with critics but barely made a dent at the box office making just over $500,000. Perhaps audiences were a tad put off by its bizarre premise but that meant they missed out on a surprisingly heartfelt if offbeat little movie. More fool them.
McCary’s SNL colleague Kyle Mooney plays James Pope – a naïve young man raised in an underground bunker by his survivalist parents whose only connection with the outside world are a mountain of VHS tapes of a weird kids’ sci-fi show starring an animatronic, Teddy Ruxpin-like character called Brigsby Bear.
It soon transpires that James’ ‘parents’ actually abducted him as a child and filmed the elaborate, multi-season TV show themselves to keep him occupied. After being returned to his bio-family, James decides to make a movie that will conclude Brigsby’s adventures and bring closure to his own ordeal.
Strange and sad but still very sweet, Brigsby Bear is a charming and funny tribute to fandom, filmmaking and those weird kids’ TV shows they used make back in the 80s and deserved a lot more love than it got last year.
