Just like Lights Out, romantic drama Me Before You also suffered the wrath of activists for potentially promoting suicide. The story has a young woman getting a job caring for a handsome, paralysed banker who is bitter about his disability.

They have some romantic times together, but he’s insistent on having an assisted suicide because he doesn't want to live that way. He commits to this decision in the weepy finale, and leaves his lover a lot of money in his will so she can pursue her dreams.

While a lover tragically dying is a genre staple, the implied message of a crippled person taking their life - and freeing others of their “burden” - can be taken away from the ending. It was clearly done to tug at the heartstrings, but it didn’t stop people with disabilities being offended by it.
