Though You Only Live Twice is a half-century old, it's impressive just how well the space-set visual effects hold up. Today, the sequences depicting both humans and aircraft alike in space are still a joy to behold, no matter how fundamentally ridiculous the scenarios themselves might be.

With Stanley Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey releasing just a year later, this was clearly a pioneering period for far-flung visual effects, and with their clear rooting in practicality rather than gaudy of-the-moment visual trickery, it's clear just why both movies present a still-majestic view of space.
