3. Not Establishing A Clear Tone Before Shooting - The New Mutants
The Lesson: Fantastic Four
Upcoming superhero horror flick The New Mutants was originally intended to be released this April, but has ultimately been delayed twice, flinging it all the way to August 2019.
This is reportedly due to bristling between producers and director Josh Boone, who wanted to lean more into the movie's horrific aspects but was vetoed during initial shooting. However, Fox eventually decided to allow Boone to commit fully to his vision, requiring around half the movie to be re-shot.
It's not exactly an encouraging sign, and the fact that the studio clearly didn't know what they wanted before shooting began is depressingly reminiscent of Fox's bungling of 2015's Fantastic Four reboot.
Similarly, director Josh Trank wanted to make a David Cronenberg-esque horror movie about the superhero team, but Fox balked after seeing an early cut, kicked the reportedly volatile Trank off the production and re-shot huge chunks of it without him.
While it's not likely The New Mutants will turn out quite as disastrous as Fantastic Four, especially as Fox is apparently letting Boone make the movie his way rather than clipping his wings, it's still a pretty bad omen for the production and hard to be optimistic about its quality moving forward.
