If youre unaware, 12 Years A Slave is actually based on the extraordinary true story of Solomon Northup who was indeed a free man captured and wrongfully sold into slavery. These memoirs were transcribed to the silver screen by John Ridley whom truthfully isnt known for anything substantial outside of last years disappointing film Red Tails. Working with Steve McQueen however has clearly been a positive considering the script is as equally harsh, direct, and brutal as the direction of the film. Whats important though is that both the screenplay and story complement each other resulting in a riveting experience thats absolutely unforgettable.
