9. George Clooney - Syriana
George Clooney gave a spectacular, Oscar-winning performance in the 2005 political thriller Syriana, but it very nearly came at the cost of his life.
While shooting the film's big torture scene, Clooney cracked his skull, and though doctors couldn't find any lasting injuries, the actor continued to feel pain throughout his body long after the accident.
Eventually Lisa Kudrow sent Clooney to see her neurologist brother, who discovered that he had a 2.5 inch tear in his back, a half-inch tear in his neck and was leaking spinal fluid out of his nose.
Treatment for the injuries involved being pumped full of various medications, which caused Clooney to develop crushing anxiety and turn to self-medication with alcohol.
While in hospital, the actor's condition got so severe he spent several weeks considering killing himself simply to escape the pain. Though things thankfully improved for Clooney, he still suffers with persistent back trouble to this day.
