Why It Deserves Best Picture: Matt Reeves' epic, poignant finale to the new Planet of the Apes trilogy is everything a franchise-capper needs to be, upping the series' scale while retaining the core emotional intimacy which made the prior two movies so well-regarded.

In addition to the incredible direction and sharp script, Andy Serkis gives Caesar an incredible send-off with a performance that once again has people considering where the line between performance and visual effects lies.

Why It Won't Get Nominated: There's the sci-fi prejudice, and moreover, the fact that some voters will find the film's premise laughable, and be unable to consider a movie about sentient apes "sensible" enough to be deemed Oscar-worthy.

Though upon release many considered that the film might be this year's Mad Max: Fury Road and stumble to a Best Picture nod on passion alone, a few months later that just doesn't seem terribly likely.
