What The Critics Said: The latest drama from Marc Webb (The Amazing Spider-Man) was broadly praised for its ensemble cast and well-wrought emotion, making the most of its rather familiar premise.
Why It Actually Sucked: Admittedly, how much you'll enjoy this film will depend entirely upon your own tolerance for saccharine drama, and even though Chris Evans, Octavia Spencer and young Mckenna Grace are certainly trying here, they just can't overcome the movie's abundance of lame subplots (including a totally pointless romance).
The script and direction are so anonymous and generic they make this feel like a movie-of-the-week despite the presence of Evans and Spencer, robbing it of the grand emotion it was clearly capable of.
This is precisely the sort of movie your aunt might come across on Netflix on a Sunday night and tell you, "It was an OK movie".
