Venom may not have joined the billion-dollar club, but it wildly overshot most sensible box office predictions - which placed it in the $400-600 million range - blasting past the $800 million mark and proving one of the year's most shocking commercial smash hits.
It's all the more impressive considering the movie's atrocious marketing, all that PG-13 controversy, Tom Hardy openly trashing the film on release week and largely negative reviews.
To their credit, Sony sensibly marketed Venom to the teen crowd and they turned up accordingly, while a stonking $272.2 million gross in China alone (that's 31.8% of its worldwide take) provided it with a nifty boost.
For context, Venom ended up out-grossing Thor: Ragnarok, Inception, Wonder Woman and Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them. Just...wow.
