As far as Jason Statham action vehicles go, The Mechanic certainly stands among one of his best. A remake of the Charles Bronson-starring 1972 film, The Stath plays an assassin who becomes the mentor of a young wannabe-assassin, Steve (Ben Foster), though the relationship between the two inevitably becomes strained and bloody. With more character development than one expects from films of this type, The Mechanic was a rare remake that exceeded its source material, and proved to be a more thoughtful role than Statham usually gets. Still, the movie had a mixed critical response and a pretty poor box office (making $51 million against a $40 million budget), so who on Earth would commission a sequel? Well, someone did, with Statham confirmed to return for the role, with director Dennis Gansel currently in talks to helm. There is a certain level of intrigue about this movie getting made, but given how the first film ended, there really isn't much need for the story to be continued.
