The Terminator franchise is infamous for giving away its big reveals ahead of time: Terminator Salvation ruined the fact that Sam Worthington was a man-machine hybrid, and Terminator Genisys gave away John Connor's (Jason Clarke) transformation into a Terminator for free.

Those twists were both a bit wonky execution-wise, though, and can't hold a candle to the incredible surprise that, in Terminator 2: Judgment Day, Arnold Schwarzenegger was playing a benevolent, heroic T-800, compared to his murderous role in the original movie.

The big reveal doesn't happen until about 30 minutes into the movie, and it's a stunning payoff to the methodical build-up of the T-800 and the malevolent T-1000 (Robert Patrick) making their respective routes towards John Connor (Edward Furlong).

Except, the damn trailers gave it all away. Sure, some will argue that the movie itself had some clear tells about the robotic allegiances - the T-1000 appearing to kill a cop and "Bad to the Bone" playing over the T-8000's acquisition of a bike - but James Cameron clearly shot the opening to be far more ambiguous than the marketing ever allowed it to be.
