14 Movie Trailers That Spoiled Awesome Plot Twists
14. Captain America: The Winter Soldier
The marketing for Captain America: The Winter Soldier featured one especially memorable image: Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson) and Cap (Chris Evans) mournfully standing over a corpse covered by a white sheet.
The common belief among fans was that this was most certainly Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson), which was seemingly confirmed when he was offed at the end of the movie's first act.
Hell, the final film even featured an alternate shot of Fury's corpse, this time leaving his face uncovered and suggesting that the Russo brothers went to great lengths to keep the death under wraps.
Except the trailers for the movie also showed a banged-up Nick Fury talking to Cap, effectively spoiling that Fury had faked his death, because this scene hadn't yet occurred in the film by the time he "died".
The fake-out was a well-executed twist, albeit ruined by the utterly unnecessary inclusion of third-act footage of a very alive-and-well Fury.
