Critical Consensus: "Live Free or Die Hard may be preposterous, but it's an efficient, action-packed summer popcorn flick with thrilling stunts and a commanding performance by Bruce Willis. Fans of the previous Die Hard films will not be disappointed." Why It's Wrong: In defense of the critics, Live Free or Die Hard is a surprisingly entertaining sequel, certainly better than the fifth film and arguably better than the second. However, its critical consensus is framed by the peculiar fact that it's significantly better-reviewed than the third film, Die Hard with a Vengeance, which sits at just 51%. It's no assumption to say that the majority of the series' fans prefer the third film to the fourth, yet the critical opinion is a complete inversion of this. In addition to Vengeance needing to be much higher (70-80% would be much more appropriate), Live Free should be knocked down about 10-15% or so. Why The Critics Liked It: Again, the critics aren't fanboys and are simply considering the movie as a yes-no statement: will it entertain fans of the series and those looking for an action fix? Absolutely. Still, it's hard not to feel bitter at critics as a whole for their praise of this film relative to their dismissal of the superior previous one.
