Critical Consensus: "While frothy to a fault, Four Weddings and a Funeral features irresistibly breezy humor, and winsome performances from Hugh Grant and Andie MacDowell." Why It's Wrong: Four Weddings is an enjoyable enough rom-com, but 95%? With Andie MacDowell's hilariously awful performance (it's pretty far from "winsome") and cringe-worthy dialogue like "Is it still raining? I hadn't noticed", this movie's critical love hasn't aged well at all. Why The Critics Liked It: For one, this was the beginning of prolific screenwriter Richard Curtis' transition from TV to film, and so for a lot of American critics this may have been their first exposure to Curtis' unmistakably British writing style. Plus, Americans (who form most of the RT critics) do have a certain romantic affection for Britishness as a whole.
