1. "The Landing" - First Man (Justin Hurwitz)

Universal

There are countless belters throughout the score, but the easy marquee track is "The Landing", a delirious five-and-a-half-minute masterpiece to which the focal Moon landing sequence is set.

Beginning simple yet gradually ratcheting up the tension by incorporating more bombastic orchestral elements, it manages to make the landing enormously stressful to watch despite the outcome being known.

More than anything, it encapsulates the impossible awe of space travel and mankind's greatest achievement with rousing aplomb. The best movie song of 2018 and, indeed, one of the strongest of recent years.
