It's easy to imagine an alternate Hollywood version of Hellboy where red makeup was haphazardly slapped on an A-list actor in a mucky trenchcoat and that was it.

Thankfully Guillermo del Toro's immense eye for detail and love of practical makeup and effects resulted in an extremely comic-faithful rendition of the superhero, ensuring the gruelling four-hour makeup sessions Ron Perlman had to suffer through were totally worth it.

This is about 90% makeup and 10% clothing in fairness, but considering the muscle suit and extensive prosthetics Perlman wore for the part, it qualifies as a costume in any sense.

It'd be so easy for a screen Hellboy to look silly, yet despite the fairly light-hearted tone of the films, he still looks like a legitimate a**-kicker at all times. The rebooted David Harbour version looks pretty neat, too, but filling Perlman's shoes won't be easy.
