15 Critically Mauled Movies (That Aren't Actually That Bad)
3. Poseidon
Rotten Tomatoes Score: 33%
Consensus: "This remake of The Poseidon Adventure delivers dazzling special effects. Unfortunately, it doesn't seem that any of the budget was left over to devote to the script."
Poseidon is another underrated remake. Although the original 70s film is superior, this sinking ship disaster movie is actually quite a nail-biter and a lot of fun.
With this one, the ship goes down after only 20 minutes so there isn't really any substance, but this is aims for thrills, not pathos, and it definitely succeeds on that front.
Admittedly, the dialogue is atrocious (Kurt Russell: "It's a pressure valve, It won't open unless there's tremendous pressure!") and the performances are largely forgettable, but in terms of spectacle this is so much better than it's given credit for.
The film is ferociously suspenseful, the special effects are outstanding and, despite the PG-13 rating, the film is also pleasingly brutal and has a delightfully gritty vibe. This really is an epic disaster movie and it makes for a stressful, but enormously enjoyable watch.
Just ignore the plot holes and you'll find this a gripping disaster thriller that definitely didn't deserve to go down with the ship.
