9. We Are What We Are (2010)

Cannibalism has been explored in horror in everything from Cannibal Holocaust to the Hannibal series. It€™s given a socio-political angle in this skin-crawling Mexican horror-drama that was recently remade in the U.S. by Jim Mickle. It centres on a family thrown into turmoil when the overbearing patriarch unexpectedly passes away. The teenage children are left to take responsibility for the family and the day-to-day running of the house which includes preparation of rituals and the hunting to put €œfood€ on the table. It€™s got an effectively grubby, skin-crawling vibe to it that makes for a distinctly uneasy watch. It explores worthy themes of family responsibility, loss and inner-city poverty under the guise of creeping, clinical, uncomfortable horror. Available on Canadian Netflix
