Netflix

And finally, Gerald's Game is a Netflix adaptation of Stephen King's controversial 1992 novel, revolving around a woman (Carla Gugino) who finds herself handcuffed to her bed with no means of escape after her kinky husband (Bruce Greenwood) drops dead from a heart attack.

Rising horror director Mike Flanagan does a fantastic job milking this minimalist premise for maximum suspense, making sparing use of flashbacks and surreal affectations to heighten Gugino's character's torment.

Gugino has been an under-appreciated character actress for many years, and this is unquestionably her strongest performance to date, aptly conveying the abject horror of a viscerally and psychologically terrifying scenario.

Certainly one of the better all-time King movies as of yet, Gerald's Game has a hypnotic, wince-inducing quality like few other horrors released this year.
