Foxcatcher might've missed out on a Best Picture nomination, but it should count itself lucky it didn't get the Nightcrawler treatment, which was to receive a solitary nomination for Best Original Screenplay and be shut out in every other category, despite being one of the best-reviewed films of the year. The particularly egregious snubs are for Best Picture, Best Actor (Jake Gyllenhaal), Best Supporting Actress (Rene Russo), Best Cinematography and Best Film Editing. So, why didn't Nightcrawler catch on with AMPAS? The likely expectation is the usual, that the Academy voters don't really care all that much for "edgy" fare such as this: it makes them uncomfortable and they find it unpalatable, again because of the aged member base. The movie's lack of sentiment or redemption no doubt rubbed them up the wrong way, but at least it wasn't shut out completely...
