Beating out Burt Bacharach's iconic "What's New, Pussycat?", Johnny Mandel's "The Shadow of Your Smile" scooped this turgid star vehicle its one and only Oscar.

Even with real-life couple Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton co-starring as adulterous lovers and a script co-written by the legendary Dalton Trumbo, The Sandpiper is an unwieldy mix of try-hard "profound" dialogue and shameless cheese.

Neither actor seems particularly interested nor do they as a team display much sexual chemistry, which might be the strangest and most disappointing thing of all.

Taylor's beauty might make it watchable-ish for her most ardent devotees, but you'll need a strong stomach for eyeroll-worthy dialogue and plodding pacing.
