5. True History Of The Kelly Gang - February 28

The latest cinematic adaptation of the legends of Australian outlaw Ned Kelly and his gang of revolters has gained notoriety in its native Australia for its ultra violence and apparent senseless depravity. While it has already proven divisive in its home country, the latest film from relentless auteur Justin Kurzel sounds like an essential watch regardless of what feelings you have on it by the end credits.

Focusing on the life of Ned Kelly in a time of occupied Australia, the film has been widely acclaimed by international critics for a breathtaking shootout sequence, which has ranked up there as one of the best in recent times. It has been praised for its central performance from one of 2019’s standout actors George MacKay, and as a beautiful return to the more animalistic instincts of Kurzel’s earlier films. The trailer looks to capture the vivid grim intensity of the time period and the grisly violence that became a means of survival.

Kurzel’s direction is the main selling point above anything else as a reason to see this in theatres. The man is simply a visionary at shooting landscapes and utilising their vastness and violence to provide emotional disruption to his characters. His adaptation of Macbeth used the colours and beauty of rural Scotland to amplify the inner emptiness of the characters. Even his version of Assassin’s Creed perfectly incorporated environment to convey a sense of memory’s limitations, with the cities in the simulation feeling blurry and intangible compared to the clarity of the present.

The prospect of him getting to work with his homeland environments with a considerably higher budget than Snowtown is unbelievably tantalising.
