Vin Diesel’s eager passion and commitment to being a lovable dork is one of his most appealing qualities to his legions of fans. While he’s proven himself as fitting in the role of macho leading man, his most interesting aspects as a performer come from his emotional sincerity and genuine childhood glee.

From every sequence in the Fast & Furious franchise where he emotes about family, to his extensive passion for Dungeons & Dragons helping him get an entire movie greenlit (The Last Witch Hunter), Diesel is an inherently endearing performer.

He almost refuses to be traditionally cool, with his extravagance as Xander Cage being constantly contrasted by the sheer dorkiness of his presentation. He is the kind of man who thinks that skateboarding down Brazilian power lines and walking through pool parties with an extravagant fur coat is the coolest a man can be, and maybe he’s right.

With this in mind, Bloodshot is a new attempt at a superhero tentpole with Vin Diesel playing a soldier who gets killed, before being revived with superpowers to go and hunt down those who killed his wife. While there is certain to be thriller elements within the film due to its central narrative, the trailer and the presence of Diesel look to be amplifying the silliness of the premise and unconventional superpowers. If this isn’t at the very least enjoyable, something has went very wrong and we need to throw 2020 away before it gets worse.
