9. Inception

Christopher Nolan’s sci-fi thriller is no doubt an interesting concept – a group of dream invaders led by Leonardo DiCaprio infiltrate people’s subconscious to commit corporate espionage, to put its multi-layered, mind-bending plot very briefly – and its visual effects, all disintegrating cities and gravity-defying hallway battles, are practically pornographic but it’s a film that tries way too hard to be clever and, despite the numerous attempts at explanation and Nolan’s own handwritten flow chart, it ends up getting lost in itself.

Strip away Inception’s labyrinthine dream within a dream within a dream plotline and breath-taking visuals and you’re left with a pretty basic heist movie scenario topped off with an annoyingly inconclusive ending that feels frustrating after two and a half hours spent indulging in Nolan’s cool but ultimately overblown idea.
