15 Most Underrated Movies Of 2016
5. Green Room
After the success of his critically acclaimed film Blue Ruin, director Jeremy Saulnier returned this year with his indie horror Green Room. The late Anton Yelchin stars as the bassist of a punk rock band who finds he and his bandmates at the mercy of a group of murderous neo-Nazis led by white supremacist Darcy (Patrick Stewart in ultimate chilling mode) when they stumble upon a murder scene after playing a gig at a backwoods music venue. Featuring some genuinely brutal moments, the horror is made all the more powerful by the fact its villains aren’t some bogeymen with supernaturally strong powers but very real (and very nasty) Nazi bastards.
Though it currently boasts a 91% Certified Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes – a very respectable score for a horror movie – it was box office flop, earning just $3.2 million on its $5 million budget. Maybe it’s because it’s not a typical horror movie. Despite its gore and suspense, it doesn’t bow to horror tropes and features fleshed out characters in real situations that aren’t often seen in the genre – perhaps something horror fans simply aren’t used to these days.
