3. The Nice Guys

Shane Black’s latest movie The Nice Guys is a comedy-noir crime thriller starring Ryan Reynolds and Russell Crowe as a pair of mismatched private detectives investigating a case within 1970s Los Angeles’ sleazy porn industry. It was a huge hit with critics but if its disappointing box office performance is anything to go by, moviegoers by and large didn’t share the sentiment.

Though it’s definitely a film for Shane Black fans – in fact, one critic called it ‘the Shane Black-est of all the Shane Black movies’ – what’s not to love about it? Its stars have great chemistry, its script is witty and funny and its 1970s setting allows for some gorgeously gaudy fashion, vintage cars and a groovy retro soundtrack. Plus, it’s a good excuse to watch Ryan Gosling in rare comedy mode (something he’ll hopefully do a lot more of in the future) stumbling around drunk and rocking a porn tash for couple of hours.
