One of the more unnecessary aspects of The Wolverine was Logan's "relationship" (if you can call it that) with Yashida's daughter Mariko (Tao Okamato). Mariko isn't a whole lot more than a damsel-in-distress throughout the movie, and while it would have been a lot more interesting to see Wolverine simply act honourably towards a woman in trouble, it gets all gooey and ends up with the two having sex mid-way through the film (not that much is shown). Then, of course, because everyone watching knows that these two aren't going to stay together forever, Wolverine gets on a plane and has a brief "moment" with Mariko before they go their separate ways. It's just thoroughly unconvincing from start to finish, and had Wolverine simply been a noble, modern-day samurai-type character instead, the narrative would have been decidedly more interesting than this yucky mulch.
