20 Amazing Movie Plot Twists That Never Get Talked About

6. The Narrator Is Actually Azazel - Fallen

We'll say it until the cows come home: Fallen is one of the most underrated horror films of the entire 1990s, cemented by its absolutely stupendous final reveal.

The film begins in medias res with protagonist Detective John Hobbes (Denzel Washington) on the absolute brink of death as his voiceover tells us, "I want to tell you about the time I almost died." This obviously suggests that, though he's in a bad way, Hobbes will survive to fight another day and ultimately triumph over the sadistic demon known as Azazel.

Azazel spends the movie body-hopping between hosts in its carnage quest, and Hobbes' ultimate plan involves allowing Azazel to possess him while fatally poisoned, ensuring that Azazel will perish trapped in Hobbes' dead body in the wilderness.

Though Hobbes' scheme initially seems to work, "his" voiceover then kicks back in, revealing that we weren't listening to Hobbes but actually Azazel-as-Hobbes all along.

At that moment, a cat discovers Hobbes' corpse, allowing Azazel to possess it, the implication being that he will get back to civilisation and continue his rampage.

It'd be easy for a twist like this to seem too cheap or manipulative, but the setup-and-payoff of it all is just perfect.
