The film follows a teenage girl, Elliott (Maisy Stella), who trips balls on drugs and comes across a 39-year-old version of herself (Aubrey Plaza), who soundly warns her to stay away from her romantic interest, Chad (Percy Hynes White).

Naturally, we as viewers assume that Chad must be bad news, that he does something truly awful to Elliott in the future, hence explaining why adult Elliott's life is such a mess. But that's not it at all.

In fact, Chad is a lovely dude who ends up dying young, and there's sadly no way for him to be saved.

Future Elliott just wants to spare her younger self the agony of living through all the grief, and so tries to get her to steer clear of Chad entirely.

It's one of those heart-rending reveals that just sucks all the air out of the room, and yet is made all the more impactful when younger Elliott decides to continue her romance with Chad anyway, tragic ending be damned.
