20 Best Movies Moments Of 2017
3. Get Out – The Sunken Place
Jordan Peele’s smash hit debut Get Out was one of those rare
horror movies that was both a hit with genre fans and the film critic community
and surprisingly – in a year full of bloody, gory horrors featuring the likes
of baby cannibalism, gruesome deglovings and killer clowns – it still managed
to be one of 2017’s scariest.
The scene in which we see protagonist Chris (the Oscar-nominated Daniel Kaluuya) visit ‘the sunken place’ while his girlfriend’s mother Missy (Catherine Keener) is hypnotising him under the guise of helping him kick his smoking habit is one of Get Out’s most effective.
Brilliantly acted by a horrified Kaluuya and a quietly menacing Keener, the scene is terrifying without an ounce of blood or gore while offering an ominous preview of the fate that awaits Chris if he doesn’t get the hell out of that suburban hellhole. But it’s what the sunken place represents – the oppression of black people in a supposedly post-racial America – that’s truly frightening.
