To be clear, Lars von Trier's latest film is not for those with casual tastes, nor is it for those with a weak stomach or faint ticker.

It is a wilfully revolting, occasionally obtuse and very, very long movie about a serial killer (Matt Dillon) regaling a shadowy figure (Bruno Ganz) with five stories of his murderous outings.

Dillon gives a performances for the ages as the troubled title character, while von Trier takes viewers on an uncompromising, surprisingly hilarious and eventually hallucinogenic trip to Hell.

It is made to polarise, no question, but if you're a fan of von Trier's or of envelope-pushing filmmaking in general, there's so, so much here to savour. Just don't eat a big meal before you watch it.
