On the surface, Upgrade looks like an absolutely kick-ass martial arts, futuristic adventure with Logan Marshall-Green as our unsung hero.

Left for dead and his wife actually dead, Marshall-Green's Grey is subject to an experimental implant that grants him more than just his lost mobility.

At first, it's a tour de force of a revenge story, with slick choreography and camera work showing off some sufficiently violent revenge.

But events soon transpire that Grey is a pawn in a much bigger plot, far bigger than him or even the creator behind the STEM chip in his spine.

It soon becomes clear that maybe implanting super-sentient software into our neural systems may not be the brightest idea. What starts as rip roaring revenge story gradually descents into the horrors of man playing god with technology, before technology starts to take over.

What could have been a standard story of a man gaining superhuman abilities through science, soon inverts into a slightly worrying look at a future ruled by mankind's reliance on AI.
