It's almost like we never heed our own warnings about technology taking us over...

Alex Garland's "debut" directorial (as Dredd doesn't officially count), it proved he had the chops to make some genuinely unnerving psychological horror.

With robots!

We've heard the tale many a time about sentient robots and/or AI rising up and overthrowing us. I, Robot, Blade Runner, The Matrix and many more have tried to warn us, after all.

But whilst those are on the grander side of things, Ex Machina scales it all down to something more frightening and claustrophobic.

Set in a secluded cabin, it tells the tale of Oscar Isaac's latest humanoid robot, Ava, and the rigorous testing he has contest "winner" Domhnall Gleeson put it through.

The problem being that Ava is too advanced an AI, as she learns how to outfox them both and make good her escape into the real world.

What makes it scary is the ambiguous ending it's left on. No all-out war, just the existential dread that machines may well be making their way into our world to surpass us...
