20 Films To Watch If You Love Halloween But Hate Horror
9. Death Becomes Her (1992)
It’s virtually impossible not to give in to the campiness and zaniness of Death Becomes Her when there’s just so much going for it. The dark comedy features Bruce Willis in his most pathetic role ever as he’s stuck in a love triangle between Madeleine Ashton and Helen Sharp, two women in rivalry of each other and striving for eternal youth.
From the get go, the movie is an extremely lively affair. It opens with a tacky musical number from the talentless Madeleine. In the audience is long-time frenemy Helen with her fiancé Ernest Menville. Allegedly, Madeleine has always had a habit of stealing Helen’s men which is why she brought Ernest to the Broadway show as a test. Unfortunately for Helen, her fiancé breaks up with her to marry Madeleine.
And the movie sticks at that crazy, unpredictable tone from then on. As the two women continue to battle it out, they secretly take a magic potion which keeps them eternally young, but it comes at a price as their bodies growly increasing dysmorphic. The visual effects provide some funny slapstick, the story is an effective satire on Hollywood’s fear of aging and the conclusion is a great parable on what being forever young truly means.
