Its been pretty obvious for a long time now that Sony has no idea what to do with the Spider-Man franchise, and Marc Webb's superhero sequel bore the heavy fingerprints of studio interference. There is definitely the potential for a great blockbuster with this cast and crew in place, but the studio's insistence on expanding the mythology instead of focusing on creating a self-contained story saw the final product end up massively overstuffed. Once again, the chemistry between Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone provided the real heart of the movie and Garfield nailed his costumed alter-ego's wisecracking charisma. Despite the best efforts of Jamie Foxx and Dane DeHaan in their villainous roles, they get lost in the shuffle amongst a number of superfluous characters and unnecessary subplots. Its never a good idea for a blockbuster franchise to be looking two movies ahead, and despite several strong performances and exciting action scenes The Amazing Spider-Man 2 turned out to be a bit of a mess.
