In recent years, Luc Besson has become better known for producing a constant stream of interchangeable action movies (The Transporter series, Colombiana, Lockout, 3 Days To Kill etc.) than his own directorial efforts, but the French filmmaker returned to the mainstream in a big way with the stylish and quite often batsh*t crazy Lucy, which would turn out to be the sleeper hit of the summer, earning over $450m at the box office. Even though the plot is completely nuts, the movie benefits from Scarlett Johansson's dedicated performance as the title character, along with master of exposition Morgan Freeman's dulcet tones lending real gravitas to some of the more absurd dialogue. With an interesting hook, talented cast and well-staged action scenes, Lucy marked a real return to form for Luc Besson as well as providing one of the most entertaining action movies of the year.
