20 Most Important Comic Book Movie Performances

17. Karl Urban (Judge Dredd) - Dredd

Karl Urban's performance in 2012's Dredd is crucial for one major reason: it made us all forget about Sylvester Stallone's terrible attempt at playing the character in 1995's Judge Dredd. Whereas Stallone committed the cardinal sin of removing the character's helmet early on in the movie, Urban puts his vanity aside and keeps the helmet on for the entire movie, instead using his gravely voice and physicality to imbue the character with plenty of personality. With his stern persona, it would be easy to assume that there wasn't much to Judge Dredd as a character, though over the course of the movie, Urban manages to make of Dredd a well-rounded, thoroughly entertaining and totally bada** action hero. His banter and relationship with Olivia Thirlby's trainee Anderson is the driving force of the movie, as Dredd goes from being skeptical of her skills at the outset to granting her a pass at the end of the film. Sadly, a Dredd sequel is unlikely, though Urban remains committed to the character, and is eager to reprise his role. We can only hope.
