Robert Rodriguez pulled off a masterful feat with Sin City, adapting Frank Miller's hard-boiled graphic novel to the screen with a jaw-dropping degree of visual authenticity: so many shots from this movie appear as though grabbed straight from the comic panel, and amassing an all-star cast certainly didn't hurt either. Easily the best performance in the movie goes to Mickey Rourke, who plays one of the movie's three protagonists, Marv. Rourke is precisely how so many of us envisioned Marv to be: gravely-voiced, freaking huge, and a total bada**. The make-up department did an absolutely outstanding job making Rourke more closely resemble his comic book counterpart, but the real leg-work is all Rourke's: his silky readings of Frank Miller's brilliantly bleak monologues are an exemplary instance of a perfect transition from page to screen. Imbuing Marv with not just the raw physicality but also the inherent sadness of his existence, Rourke captured the essence of Marv beautifully. Rourke will be returning to play Marv once again in Sin City: A Dame to Kill For, due for release this summer.
