The Wachowskis are a frustrating pair of directors. They often become burdened by the weight of their own science-fiction extravagance and yet theyve always managed to have such a capable grasp of creating amazing action sequences at the same time. The aerial chase scene from Jupiter Ascending epitomizes this as the explanation behind it doesnt make much sense, but its actual execution is the stuff great action movies are made of. Set against the Chicago night sky, Channing Tatums Caine seeks to scurry away Mila Kuniss Jupiter from pursuers, and they race through the air thanks to his anti-gravity boots. The scene works because it finds a way to present this grand moment in a way unlike any other action piece this year. Its unique nature immediately makes it stand out and rooting the incredible elements of this universe into a setting that the viewer can connect with makes for a winning combination. Unfortunately, the movie suffers from then on, but this moment will be a held up as a sign of what Jupiter Ascending could have been.
