Though a Detective Pikachu movie was actually first mentioned last year, it seemed like it was probably going to be one of those fanciful ideas that never actually got made, like the Hungry Hungry Hippos, Monopoly, Tetris and Sonic the Hedgehog movies that have been floated in recent years.
However, last month the film was officially confirmed with a concrete release date and some major casting announcements. The Get Down's Justice Smith will play the human lead, while Ryan Reynolds will voice Detective Pikachu himself. How about that.
There's virtually no worry that this film will end up taking itself too seriously, and with Reynolds lending his distinctive motormouth shtick to the legendary gaming icon, the results should at least be entertainingly surreal.
