14. Chariots Of Fire
What It Sounds Like: Before 300, Immortals and Clash Of The Titans, there was Chariots Of Fire. While the idea of a stream of fiery chariots careening around the Grecian landscape sounds genre-boosting, this is not that film.
What It Actually Is: Instead its a moving athletic drama which follows the lives two British runners in the 1924 Olympics; Harold Abrahams and Eric Liddell. Loosely based on a true story, it traces their individual stories before the pair unite to conquer the globe at the Paris Olympics. While there is a distinct absence of flaming carts, the title is taken from a line in a William Blake poem, Bring me my chariot of fire. The verse was later adapted into a popular hymn, Jerusalem which can be heard toward the end of the film.
What It Should Have Been Called: The Running Men
