18. The Secret Agent - The Hairy Leg

The Secret Agent is a very good film in a lot of ways but it is also, to be blunt, a bit of a slog that took far too long to tell a pretty simple story. It was a glacially-paced and ponderous affair... that also happened to contain one of the wackiest, most WTF moments of 2025. 

In its second half, out of nowhere, it deploys this bats**t crazy sequence where a hairy severed leg comes to life and starts attacking people... what?! In what is otherwise a deadly serious political thriller, such a nutty bit of surrealism certainly wasn't what anyone was expecting. 

That mustn't be misread as criticism, of course. Not only was this a joyous excursion into the fantastical, but it's actually not nearly as random as you might think. The urban legend of the Hairy Leg was frequently deployed by Brazilian newspapers during the dictator era. As they weren't allowed to criticize the actions of the state, they instead symbolism such as this - for example, blaming state violence on a hairy leg. 

In this very scene, the Hairy Leg is attacking gay men meeting in secret, indicating an attack by state forces in reality. This was clever stuff, and there was a real method to the madness here.
