2. Alexia Gives Birth To A Car-Baby - Titane

Raw director Julia Ducournau's Titane is one of the most shocking and yet strangely moving films of the year, revolving around Alexia (Agathe Rousselle), a woman who has a metal plate in her head following a childhood car accident, and now appears to be sexually attracted to vehicles.

But if you thought David Cronenberg's Crash was a trip, you ain't seen nothin' yet.

Ducournau's wild ride of a darkly funny horror film sees Alexia soon enough getting naked and "having sex" with a car that takes her fancy, resulting in her falling pregnant.

Given that motor oil begins leaking from Alexia's vagina, it's not terribly surprising - though certainly still very shocking - what happens at the end of the movie.

Alexia finally gives birth to her child, which happens to be a baby with a titanium spine and skull, though in a tragic twist Alexia dies in childbirth, leaving the baby to be cared for by Alexia's surrogate father Vincent (Vincent Lindon).

Given the very clear potential for a story this off-the-wall to be rendered a laughable farce, it's truly impressive how delicately Ducournau shapes the film's tone to become something truly affecting. And very, very weird, no doubt.
